This is perhaps the watershed film in Dario Argento’s career, the moment of transition between the thrillers of the first phase and his later turn towards fantasy. And, with Suspiria, it remains his best and most famous film. In a city shot like a Hopper painting displaying a brilliantly reinvented geography, with views of Turin, Rome and Perugia, a pianist helplessly witnesses a murder. Soon, as the corpses multiply, he discovers that he too is in danger. On the surface it is a mystery, at its heart it is a Gothic tale that challenges the certainties of reason.
