A tribute arranged jointly by the Deodato family and ANAC. Less than a year ago, the film world lost Ruggero Deodato, actor, AD, screenwriter, film and television director, and creator of hit commercials. It was a career spanning six decades and more, one that can’t be reduced to his most popular film, the one that made his name, internationally: Cannibal Holocaust. Marco Giusti, with the help of Deodato’s friends and family and the professionals who knew him, has crafted an exhaustive portrait of the filmmaker and his career, using film clips, backstage footage, film stills and shots of his private life. Deodato, with his inimitable personality, was one of the most prolific and least appreciated of Italian auteurs. He tried his hand at every genre, from cannibal or action films to westerns and erotica, and all with the same directorial rigour that his mentor, Roberto Rossellini, had taught him. Ruggero Deodato: one of the great Italian Kings of the B’s, who influenced directors of the caliber of Oliver Stone, Quentin Tarantino, John Frankenheimer, and Eli Roth. Those masters of the B movie rewrote the rules of international exploitation cinema. Deodato’s films, whether loved or hated, challenged or followed, and even persecuted, always got talked about – and have never stopped speaking to audiences.
