For the centennial of the birth of screenwriter and director Brunello Rondi, there will be a screening of one of his cult films, Il demonio (The Demon), which among other inspired William Friedkin’s film The Exorcist. Between melodrama, horror and anthropological essay, the film – presented at the Venice Film Fest – is a shining example of the finest Italian “maudit” cinema. Rondi, who had worked closely with Rossellini and Fellini, offers a powerful black-and-white portrayal of the Lucania region, crushed between its passions and atavic rituals (which intermingle Christianity, exorcisms, ignorance and black magic).
