Following the success achieved with Martin Scorsese and Marco Bellocchio, Casa del Cinema will entrust the programming – from March 20th to 26th (with repeat screenings through April 1st) – to Gianni Amelio, a film-loving director with a “weakness for cinema” (from the title of his book “Il vizio del cinema” published some years ago by Einaudi). The series will be inaugurated, Wednesday March 20th at 7:30 pm, by Amelio himself who will be on the stage before the screening of Touch of Evil by Orson Welles. On that occasion, the filmmaker will present to the public his entire selection, which includes Rebel Without a Cause by Nicholas Ray, Elevator to the Gallows by Louis Malle, Kiss Me, Stupid by Billy Wilder and Juliet of the Spirits (Giulietta degli Spiriti) by Federico Fellini, which will be screened on Saturday March 23rd thirty years after the death of Giulietta Masina.
The audience is also invited to see five of the most famous films by the director, a native of Calabria, who will return to the stage to introduce The Way We Laughed (Così ridevano), which won the Golden Lion at the Venice International Film Festival, and Tenerezza: Holding Hands, winner of four Nastro d’Argento awards and a David di Donatello, which starred a remarkable Renato Carpentieri. The programme will be completed by Colpire al cuore, Amelio’s film debut, The Stolen Children (Il ladro di bambini), which represents one of the most magical moments of 1990s Italian cinema, and won the Grand Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival, and L’intrepido: A Lonely Hero, presented at the Venice Fim Festival and the author’s only film with the tone of a surreal comedy.
