Thanks to this film I discovered that Robert Zemeckis, the very talented and very successful Hollywood director, worked just like my father: as a boy, he used to build special effects with his friends and then write stories based on the effects they created. That’s how it was with Death Becomes Her: they discovered how to make holes in actors’ bellies, how to make their heads twist round… and they wrote the story on the back of those discoveries. Zemeckis called me to do an audition for the character Lisle von Rhoman, who is immortal thanks to the elixir of life, and I fell in love with her. I was modelling for Lancôme, advertising their anti-aging cream, and I thought: “I’m perfect for the role.” I just had to get it. Zemeckis said to me: “You’re one of the first people I asked, but you know what studios are like, they want me to see at least fifty actresses. So I can’t promise you anything, I have to audition everyone and then I’ll let you know.” I waited for a month. I had almost given up when I got the call: the role was mine! It was great fun acting alongside Meryl Streep and Goldie Hawn, who is really nice. And the film was a great success, especially with gay men.
