The children are watching us is the film by Vittorio De Sica that in 1943 brought into our cinema some of the most important themes that would lead to Neorealism: among them, a new vision of childhood on the silver screen. This premise is the basis for the film series of the same name, featuring ten films to be screened between July 1 and 31 at Casa del Cinema, a journey into the themes, desires and fears of our youngest through the eyes of characters such as Pricò (The Children are Watching Us), Edmund (Germany Year Zero by Roberto Rossellini), Maria Cecconi (Bellissima by Luchino Visconti), Pinocchio (The Adventures of Pinocchio by Luigi Comencini), Mignon (Mignon Has Come to Stay by Francesca Archibugi), Salvatore (Nuovo Cinema Paradiso by Giuseppe Tornatore), Luciano and Rosetta (The Stolen Children by Gianni Amelio), Raffaele and his class (Ciao Professore by Lina Wertmüller), Arturo Giammarresi (The Mafia Kills Only in Summer by Pif) and Gelsomina (The Wonders by Alice Rohrwacher). A series of unforgettable portraits of resilient children, “tough-skinned” as Truffaut might have said, who were too often denied a real childhood.
